Every MA is practical. It all depends on the quality of training the individual martial artist recieves. Its the martial artist that spots openings and depending on their level of skill create openings and opprotunities to exploit. Its only inexperienced martial artists that try to show off that try using fancy moves and end up in the hospital or theyre plain Dbags.
