What is the best route to take from upstate to pick someone up at Laguardia airport in NYC?

Here's the deal. I'm driving down from Newburgh, NY and picking someone up at LaGuardia Int'l Airport at approx 4:00 PM on a Friday (bad time I know). I'm trying to find out what the best route is to avoid traffic. I usually take I-87 (Maj Deegan) South down to the Triboro Br and the same way back up to Newburgh again. Is there a better way? Thanks for any helpful answers!
