Does anyone know how long to expect pain following gastric byp surgery?

I am caring for my brother who had the surgery 4 days ago. He is still having a lot of left-sided belly pain and he is worried it will last forever. Also he is having a hard time getting in his 64 ounces of fluid. Does anyone have any advice or a similar situation. (He's really emotional and scared).
